Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government has decided in an Isbat (confirmation) meeting that the beginning of the fasting month or 1 Ramadan year 1440 Hegira/2019 AD, falls on on May 6.

"We received nine reports on sightings of the crescent moon in a number of observation points in Indonesia," Religious Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said at a press conference at the office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Jakarta on Sunday.

Of 102 places from where the moon is observed, the crescent moon was sighted in nine. The nine reports are the initial numbers that can increase with the observation process throughout Indonesia.

Tarawih (evening Ramadan prayers) could start Sunday night before starting the fasting month Monday.

The Isbat meeting was attended by the Supreme Court, The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), The National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), experts from Islamic organizations, ambassadors of friendly countries, and others.
