Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin urged residents participating in the Eid al-Fitr homecoming activities to be vigilant against the COVID-19 infection by adhering to health protocols while travelling to their hometowns.

"This year, the government has allowed residents to resume their Eid homecoming activities, yet, because the pandemic is not over, residents must exercise caution (while travelling)," the vice president noted in his press statement received here.

Amin's remarks on the Eid homecoming activities were delivered after presenting social aid packages to the residents in Aceh Besar District, Aceh, earlier on Thursday.

The vice president emphasized that the residents' vigilance is essential to avoid transmitting COVID-19 to families and relatives that would welcome travellers at their hometowns and prevent a surge in COVID-19 cases after the Eid homecoming period ends.

"It has been estimated by many parties that around 70-80 million residents will participate in the Eid homecoming tradition. Residents must exercise caution because in their hometown, they will meet their parents, relatives in fragile health, and children," Amin stated.

The vice president also urged residents to take their COVID-19 vaccine and, if they have received their second vaccine dose, to take the booster vaccine to contribute to developing herd immunity and protecting themselves from the COVID-19 infection, particularly during the Eid exodus period.

"Residents are encouraged to maintain their health by adhering to health protocols and taking their COVID-19 vaccine, and (ensuring that) residents complete the second and booster vaccine doses," he noted

The government is currently exerting efforts to enhance the national economic recovery and bolster residents' productivity after the pandemic, Amin remarked, adding that he is optimistic that the COVID-19 pandemic and its fallout would end soon.
