We estimate that the number of newcomers this year will be the same as in 2019, around 150 thousand–180 thousand per yearJakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government has estimated that 20 thousand to 50 thousand newcomers will arrive in Jakarta after the 2022 Eid homecoming period.
There are several factors behind the estimate, including COVID-19 cases, which are increasingly coming under control.
"We estimate that this May there will be a spike to 20 thousand to 50 thousand new arrivals in Jakarta," Head of the Jakarta Population and Civil Registry Service Budi Awaluddin said on Wednesday.
The month of May will see the most new arrivals with the flow of Eid homecomers, he predicted.
As per the Jakarta government’s estimate, Jakarta will record an additional immigrant population of up to 180 thousand people in 2022.
"We estimate that the number of newcomers this year will be the same as in 2019, around 150 thousand–180 thousand per year," Awaluddin added.
He informed that based on data, there was a decline in newcomers number during 2020–2021. The decline was caused by the increase in positive cases of COVID-19 in Jakarta.

In 2018, the number of immigrants arriving in Jakarta reached 151,017, he noted. Then, in 2019, Jakarta’s immigrant population increased to 169,778.
However, amid the COVID-19 pandemic situation in 2020, the number of immigrants arriving in Jakarta fell to 113,814.
Meanwhile, in 2021, the number of newcomers in Jakarta reached 138,740, reflecting an increase compared to 2020.

Based on the results of the regional statistics office (BPS), in 2020, the total population of the capital city was pegged at 10.56 million.
During the preceding 10 years, BPS Jakarta recorded an increase of 954.3 thousand people compared to 2010, reflecting a growth rate of 0.92 percent.
Of the total population in Jakarta, 71.98 percent of people are from the productive age group, namely 15–64 years, and 8.59 percent are elderly.
The largest population concentration is in East Jakarta, reaching 3.04 million people.
